Retrofit and Upgrade Kits

Most of the monochromators and spectrometric instruments McPherson has delivered to university and other research laboratories over the last forty years can be retrofitted with respect to recent developments in detector and computer control technologies. Our reconditioning and upgrade services enable the new generation of McPherson users to enjoy the excellent results and satisfaction derived from our classic instrumentation.

When ordering retrofit kits for detectors or scanning drive systems, users should be sure to specify the instrument model number and serial number. If other than McPherson suggested PDA or CCD systems are to be mounted, detector adapters are required. In these cases, users MUST specify the make and model of the detection system and if possible supply drawings of the mounting interface and position of detector's photocathode.

UPGRADE for COMPUTERIZED Spectrometer Monochromator Scanning

The described retrofit kits will permit the user to remove existing synchronous drive systems, install appropriate limit switches and motor drive systems. The kit prepares the following instruments for use with the McPherson model 789A-3 scan drive system - others can be accommodated on request. The 789A-3 has a standard RS232 interface (IEEE available) and can be supplied with user friendly software.

UPGRADE - Reconditioning Services

Instrument reconditioning restores old monochromators and instruments to 'like new' condition. Services include: evaluation, replacement or repair of damaged components, leak detection (vacuum integrity, RGA scans, etc.), rebuild of main subassemblies, new or reconditioned optics, as well as any desired factory upgrades.

A purchase order for US$ 250.00 should be submitted in exchange for an official return authorization number. We can give advise regarding packing of the monochromator or instrument. The instrument(s) may then be shipped at the customer's expense to McPherson, to the attention of the RMA number.

The nominal US$ 250.00 covers an evaluation of the instrument's general condition and performance. At that point, McPherson will supply a firm quotation for the required repairs and recommended upgrades. Users can choose to amend the previous purchase order or submit a new one for the desired reconditioning services. If no services are required, the instrument will be returned to the customer at the customer's expense.

UPGRADE - Optical Components

The instrument reconditioning services described above include evaluation and best effort reconditioning or replacement of system optics.

NOTE: The optics and especially the diffraction gratings found in McPherson instruments are extremely delicate, precision (lambda/8), first surface optics. They should not be handled unless absolutely necessary. If handling is required, care must be taken to prevent the delicate first surface from being marked by fingerprints, water stains, or any other contamination. Dust or oil films on optical surfaces can damage an optic's reflective efficiency and performance - often beyond repair. Optics submitted for evaluation or reconditioning will be accepted only on a best effort basis.
